WORKS

Simon Lavi's photographs seduce the viewers' gaze while, at the same time, distancing us (even as the figures in the frame fluctuate between succumbing to and fighting against the frame). Lavi offers us oddly stagnant scenes that appear to be overcrowded sweatshops, or isolation wards, or shantytowns, or cluttered dorm rooms, or questionable massage parlors, or industrial wastes. But we have the uncomfortable sensation that we are being confronted by the ubiquitous but unseen Other in a Sartrean universe which is our own.
An Other who refuses to be color-coded into gender-specific hues or interactions. How many pink-garbed people can pile into a pink car going nowhere, in images that partake equally of Edward Hopper, Hieronymus Bosch and Marx (Brothers).

You're gonna need a bigger boat (2023)

The phrase You're gonna need a bigger boat is a line from the 1975 film Jaws, spoken by the character Chief Brody when he first sees the size of the shark they are hunting. It became a catchphrase for anytime anything went wrong. It could be used as a metaphor for any situation where one is confronted with something much larger and more powerful than oneself. Overall, the phrase "You're gonna need a bigger boat" has the power to convey a sense of awe and humility, and can be used to reflect on the relationship between humanity and the natural world.

Pink. Unidentified. Such a Useless Color! (2023)

In Simon Lavi’s series Pink. Unidentified. Such a Useless Color! bodies huddle together, crumpling over in communion and melancholy. Lavi explores the color, using it as a lens to explore moments of human interaction. Scenes range from overcrowded sweatshops and isolation wards to cherry blossomed front yards and cluttered dorm rooms.

Body Language (2023)

Body language is a powerful non-verbal form of communication. It involves facial expressions, gestures, and postures, conveying emotions and intentions without words. Often complements or contradicts the spoken language, it plays a crucial role in human interactions.

Changing Places (2024)

An exhibition that explores the nature of change, inspired by the artist's experiences of relocating and adapting to different cities and cultures. It examines how places influence our identities and how we adjust to new environments, revealing the complex dynamics of change in our lives.Developed over eight months, the exhibition utilized evolving AI techniques, reflecting in the changing narratives and styles of the artwork. It showcases a blend of abstraction and realism, with abstraction distilling subjects to their core elements to engage viewers with the concepts and emotions of change. Realism, in contrast, captures the tangible aspects of our surroundings. By incorporating this interplay, the exhibition encourages the audience to reflect on the nature of change and its impact on our lives.
In essence, "Changing Places" is a visual and conceptual journey into the transformative power of places and their role in shaping our identities.
